The Delft University of Technology attracts many international students, who all need a place to live while they are studying in the city. Within the redevelopment of the TU North area Student housing corporation DUWO realized a new large housing complex which is a real home-from-home for students and guests from abroad. With 332 units, the International Student House (ISH) offers accommodation for some 350 international students and is a joint design by cepezed and cepezedinterior.
The double height, transparent plinth along the square comprises a restaurant with adjoining terrace and a common room. The latter designed by cepezedinterior. The design uses colours, materials and graphics prints to create a connection with the many different student nationalities. cepezedinterior increased the recognizability of the different building blocks by applying one strong colour for each. Entrances, mailboxes and studentroom doors within each building block are similarly finished.
Additionally, the ISH offers a variety of other facilities such as a launderette, a storage for household refuge and a large, lockable in-house bicycle park. A large transparent cantilever construction on the west side holds commercial spaces with split-level floor fields and a wide view over the adjoining river. Transparent stairwells at the construction ends adjoining the courtyard generate a lively experience. The stairwells are lit during night time. DUWO has taken care of the interior of the studentrooms. The student rooms of ca. 16 sq meters are equipped with their own sanitary unit with a shower, toilet and sink. Per six to eight rooms, they are clustered in a communal group with its own kitchen-dining area and adjoining balcony. The development also contains a diversity of amenities. The positioning of the new buildings lends the area a logical structure with a clear sequence of public spaces. Wide passages in the rectangular’s long sides constitute a logical connection between the different parts hereof: a square along the western Professor Schermerhornstraat, a courtyard in between the building blocks and a future park on the east side.
